In high flow and low head pumping application such as for flood mitigation and irrigation pumping system, Archimedean screw pump and electrical submersible pumps are favorable choice of pump technology. Archimedean screw pump is a positive displacement pump, which typical comprises of helical blades that surround a central cylindrical hollow tube and installed inside semi-circular, or even closed circular cross section trough. Electric motor coupled with gearboxes is often used to the drive mechanism for the pump set. On the other hand, Electrical Submersible Pump is a kinetic pump of centrifugal type that convert mechanical energy into hydraulic energy Typical electrical submersible pump, comprises of closely coupled overhung impeller, waterproof submersible electric motor, shaft, bearing, seals, pump casing with inlet and discharge outlet and other required connection parts for respective installation arrangement and alternatives. The selection of these pumps for flood mitigation and irrigation pumping system has often been debated. Thus, this paper intended to establish a comparative study on the operational and maintenance between Archimedean screw pump and electrical submersible pump at various arrangement, type, capacity and head. Multi -criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method is employed for comparison whereby weighting criteria for selection are its operation, preventive maintenance, major maintenance and overhaul requirement as well as life cycle cost are evaluated.
